Sonu Pahal
Postdoctoral Fellow
I completed my Master's degree in Bioinformatics at the Indian Institute of Information Technology Allahabad (IIIT Allahabad), India, followed by a joint Ph.D. in Bioinformatics at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, USA. During my doctoral research, I studied mitochondrial protein homeostasis during aging and neurodegeneration. Using C. elegans, proteomics, and computational approaches, I investigated the accumulation of insoluble mitochondrial proteins across aging and Alzheimer's disease models and identified conserved protein networks shared between C. elegans and human Alzheimer's disease.
I joined the Sun Lab at UAB as a Brain-PRIME Postdoctoral Fellow, where my research focuses on understanding how developmental timing programs coordinate mitochondrial maturation and function. Using C. elegans, I am investigating whether heterochronic pathways that regulate developmental transitions also shape mitochondrial state across development and how this coordination contributes to neuronal maturation and function.
More broadly, I am interested in understanding how mitochondrial biology is integrated with developmental programs and how disruption of this coordination may influence neuronal function, aging, and disease.
