Birmingham (Bham), also known as the Magic City, was once a industrial center in the South with industry in iron, steel and railroading. It was also the center of the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 60s.

In addition to being a leading academic and medical center in the South, with UAB being the largest employer in the city, Birmingham is also home to a burgeoning startup community. The city boasts an impressive culinary and brewery scene, with easy access to outdoor activities and the beach. Combined with proximity to other major cities in the South (Nashville, Atlanta, New Orleans) and affordable living, there is no better place than Birmingham to begin your research career in a PhD program or further your research training in a postdoc fellowship.
